Is Courage on Your Balance Sheet?

How to measure, map and close your courage gap.
By Ralf Schneider

Idea in Brief

The Problem

The courage gap — the distance between what leaders know and what they say, and between what organisations see and what they act on — is the most expensive liability on the balance sheet. It never appears on one. Research with 187 senior executives across five independent cohorts and four years shows it is measurable, predictable, and addressable.

The Insight

The gap takes two forms. The defensive gap (truth not spoken) is a bottom-line liability — it inflates the cost of late decisions, unmanaged risk, and talent attrition. The proactive gap (opportunity not claimed) is a top-line liability — it suppresses innovation and market capture. Together they represent the largest source of recoverable performance in most organisations.

The Practice

Four evidence-based steps — Step Up, Step In, Step Forward, Step Together — give leaders a repeatable discipline for closing the gap at the level of the individual, the team, and the organisation. Each addresses a specific barrier identified in primary research. They are not prescribed from theory. They were observed in practice.
