Team leader's view

Questions team leaders ask about team courage

How do I get my team to tell me the truth?

Change the calculation, not the people. Your team already knows the truth; they have concluded that saying it costs too much. Three moves shift that: go first (name a hard truth of your own), reward the first mover visibly, and build a structured norm — a regular, expected moment where the unsaid gets said. The Team Courage Sprint installs exactly that norm.

Why does my leadership team agree in meetings and then relitigate decisions afterwards?
Artificial harmony. When challenge feels unsafe or pointless, teams save their real opinions for safer rooms — the corridor, the car park, the one-to-one. The decision then lacks genuine commitment, so it gets relitigated. The fix is not more alignment meetings; it is building the team courage to contest decisions properly before they are made.
What is a Team Courage Sprint?
A 90-day programme that moves a leadership team of 6–16 from individual courage gaps to shared courage infrastructure, built around real decisions the team currently faces. Three phases: Diagnose (weeks 1–3, team assessment and facilitated diagnostic), Sprint (weeks 4–10, one-day Courage Catalyst workshop plus three coaching sessions), Embed (weeks 11–13, shared commitments and practice rhythm).
What happens in the one-day team workshop?
The Courage Catalyst is a circuit through the Four Steps of Courage — Step Up, Step In, Step Forward, Step Together. Each member surfaces a real challenge in the opening Courage Walk, then the team moves through embodied exercises for each step, crystallising one commitment per step. The team leaves with a shared Courage Map — a live artefact for the meetings that follow.
How is this different from a team-building offsite?
Team-building builds warmth; this builds truth. The day is not about trust falls or personality colours — it works directly on the conversations your team has been avoiding and the decisions it has been relitigating. Warmth often follows, but as a by-product of finally saying the real thing, not as the goal.
How do I know if my team has a courage gap?
Run a 20-minute audit in your next leadership meeting. Ask: Where in our work is there something we all know but no one is saying? Who on this team needs someone to step up for them — and hasn’t asked? What could we do in 30 days that we’ve been avoiding? If the room goes quiet, you have your answer — and your starting agenda.
What results can I expect for team performance?
Faster problem surfacing, decisions that stick, and less escalation through you. The research is consistent: Google’s Project Aristotle found psychological safety the strongest predictor of team performance; Deloitte found inclusive, voice-rich teams perform 17% better and decide 20% faster. Our four-year study shows the four courage behaviours explain ≈75% of leadership effectiveness.
My team is stretched. How much time does this take?
The core investment is one day together plus three 90-minute facilitated sessions across 90 days — inside meetings you already hold where possible. The diagnostic takes each person about ten minutes. Teams typically recover the time within the quarter through fewer escalations, less relitigation and earlier problem surfacing.
What is my role as the team leader during the workshop?
Full participant, first mover. The strongest signal in the room is what you do: surface a real challenge of your own in the Courage Walk, take the feedback without defending, and make your four commitments as publicly as everyone else. The facilitator carries the process; you carry the proof that truth is safe here.
How do we start?
Three steps: run the free five-question team audit in your next leadership meeting; have your team take the free Courage Quick Test (20 questions each, individual Courage Profiles); then book a sprint brief — a short conversation where we scope the 90 days around the decisions your team is actually facing.
